Location Targeting Strategies

In order for you to make the best possible profit from your vending machines, you need to place them in the right locations. There are many different factors that will help you to decide on the right spots for your machines and how to identify them before you actually locate the machines. This also helps you to avoid having to relocate them later on when you don't see the income you're looking for. To get yourself off on the right foot, you'll want to make sure that you have an effective targeting strategy in place so that you can follow it and effectively decide on the ideal site.

There are two main customers for vending machines. These are impulse buyers and those who have made a regular habit of buying the same product. Primarily, though, it will be the impulse buyers who will make up the profits you see. This means that you will not necessarily be looking for a spot to try to sell to clients who have actually planned to buy your product, but should instead be looking for a location that will expose your vending machines to as many people as possible - some of whom will make the purchase of your products simply because they are there and they know that they can. These people are not buying out of necessity, but are instead filling a want, a desire.

Selling to impulse shoppers with a vending machine means that you'll need certain specific qualities in the location that you choose. The first of these is relatively obvious: you need to have a position that exposes your vending machine to as much foot traffic as possible. This needs to be a place where a lot of people are walking by and where they will be able to see and access the machine relatively easily. Remember that convenience is also a factor to impulse purchases, since the customer could just as easily decide not to buy the product if it is too challenging to obtain; if it's too inconvenient, your product will no longer hold the allure to the impulsive shopper.

This being said, some of the best places to locate a machine can be in malls, subway stations, hotels, beaches, theme parks, and other very public locations. Make sure that the appearance of your machines matches the type of location that you choose, and that they offer the type of food, drink, toys, or entertainment that people will want in those particular locations. For example, you'll do much better business with a vending machine that sells cold drinks at a beach than one that sells hot chocolate and coffee. Similarly, candy, snacks, and junk food do very well at theme parks.

Another good quality to a vending machine location is a place where people spend a lot of time. This means that instead of simply walking by the machine, they spend a lot of time very close to it. The more people find themselves having to wait near the machine, the more sales you'll have. Therefore, public transit stops, doctors' offices, hospitals, airports, bus terminals, train stations, auto service centers, lunch rooms, and other similar locations will bring attention to your vending machines. If there are chairs near a potential spot for your vending machine, it's a good sign.

Don't forget that there is also a great deal of opportunity anywhere that people don't have many (or any) options for purchasing other similar products. If someone wants a drink or a snack and there are no other opportunities for obtaining those items, your vending machines will be the obvious choice.
